Students from Olivet College of Journalism (OCJ) share biblical ideas on ethical behaviors in Journalism. The course "Communication Ethics and Worldview" is being taught by OCJ Dean Dr. William Willis. The lectures provide an overview of ethical issues confronting journalists by researching case studies of professional communicators in America. Students learn how to apply biblical ethics in journalism.
In one lecture, Dr. Wills introduced the famed Christian ethicist C.S. Lewis to the students, to see his worldview on the differences between ethical views in atheism and Christianity. Another lecture examined the case of Cindy Herbig, part of the Watergate scandal, and who was featured in the article “Lying in America.” The Watergate scandal was perhaps the most famous example in modern U.S. history where journalistic ethics was important.
OCJ student, Emily Harrera, shared her thoughts in the discussion. “I believe these values represent the American culture well. I value the opportunity to gain closer insight into these values that differ from my own culture.”
Throughout the semester, the course will continue to examine further case studies and give students the biblical basis needed to be a future Christian journalist.
