Olivet College of Journalism (OCJ) students taking the Information Literacy Class had an opportunity to visit the San Francisco Center for the Book (SFCB), led by the instructor Carol Jensen from the Journalism College. The course offers training in online researching and evaluating content from its original sources. Though emphasis is placed in online materials, it was important to intertwine printed resources into the process. The visit to SFCB offered students a glimpse at paper sources and the printmaking process in comparison with online materials.
The San Francisco Center for the Book offers workshops and events that educate people about the arts and crafts of book and print making. Through understanding both formats, students can find resources that complement each other during research. One student shared her reflection about the visit.
“It’s quite interesting to see how traditional books are published manually. We are so caught up in online delivery of digital content that we tend to forget about the artistic procedures of print and book making,” said Sophia Meng.
The Information Literacy Course plans to collaborate in groups for its upcoming final project. Tasks include locating content information from various format ranging from print, audio, blogs, video, and websites. Through the experience, students from the OCJ program develop a broader perspective for different deliverable content used in media.
