Social Media Strategist Offers OCJ Workshops

February 12, 2012

The world of social media is here and journalists are more engaged than ever in utilizing media tools to report, monitor and communicate news.  Olivet College of Journalism looks to make social media an integral part in its training of future journalists.

The college invited social media strategist Lillian McKay to give their students an in depth look at how current trends are effecting global news companies.  Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube provide excellent tools to give readers the latest in  what's happening.  In addition to informing, the tools can also be used to engage readers.

Companies she worked with have already employed various social networks in distributing information and engaging readers.  McKay gave a presentation in latest trends for social media followed by examples of how they were utilized by her clients through cast studies.  The session explored ways in how students can utilize these tools immediately in related assignments and projects.

One OCJ student found the experience to be very valuable and reflects on how his casual and work life is already meshed with social media.

"There are so many tools out there now that can allow me to connect with families, friends, and co-workers.  It has definitely kept me and my readers more engaged, " said BA student Matthew Cordova.  I usually didn't have this opportunity when I was growing up but these new methods are improving my senses for journalism and servant for Christ by connecting with colleagues around the world."

McKay serves as an independent consultant for International Christian media companies such as The Christian Post, Goodnewsline, and  Breathecast.  Her social media workshop series was offered for both BA and MA OCJ students.
