OU Business Alumnus Shares Field Experience with Students

November 16, 2012

This quarter Ms. Jewel Shaw, an Olivet University alumnus and seasoned publisher relationship development professional, led a series of workshops for both business bachelors and masters students. Shaw shared her rich field experience by outlining key steps in signing publishers and maintaining business relationships.

Shaw explained that having the right Christian attitude towards doing business is essential to success, quoting verses from Luke 12:15-21, 16:13, 1Timothy 6:10, Phil 4:11-13, Mark 10:21-27. She reflected on her personal business experience to illustrate to students her principle that "money is not evil in and of itself. It is often used for evil purposes or selfish purposes. However, God wants us to use money for greater purposes--saving souls and building His Kingdom on this earth."

"While I was studying at OU, I was thankful that I was able to have a lot of hands-on experience. I was paired with Christian industry professionals who taught me critical issues in the discipline, and the impact of business on Christian missions, which benefited me a lot in the way that I set my career goals to serve the Lord," said Shaw.

Shaw concluded the workshop by showcasing key steps involved in the process of developing a professional, long-term, and win-win relationship with quality publishers. A Q&A session followed afterwards.

"After this workshop, I gained a deeper understanding into the cooperative relationship between business partners," said Sally Song, a business major student currently working in an internship program.

"I've learned that when engaging in business, possessions are not our master, but rather God is our true Lord to whom we should maintain a pure and faithful heart always," added Song.

The Olivet College of Business plans to continue its workshop series led by Christian industry professionals until the end of the quarter.
